Animation plays a crucial role in William Kentridge’s artistic thinking. In the gallery Drawings for Projection, five animated films and related drawings are presented, created through a frame-by-frame animation process that repeatedly employs charcoal drawing, erasing, and redrawing. The works reveal the temporal relationships between frames, while traces of drawing gestures and even paper debris produced through friction are intentionally preserved within the animation. Through this process, Kentridge continuously foregrounds the importance of process and spatial relationships. His work unfolds as a fluctuating world—a slow-moving dynamic in which nothing remains static.
Led by hand-drawn animation specialist CHUANG Ho, the workshop and the drop-in drawing area break down the basic principles of frame-by-frame animation and translate them into a collective, participatory experience. Participants are invited to draw collaboratively on tracing paper, where each drawing is influenced by the previous one and, in turn, shapes the next. Through guided activities, participants can observe how their initial drawings are transformed in the hands of others, how lines of thought progress through shared marks, and how multiple interpretations and imaginations accumulate—ultimately revealing a process of mutual influence and continuous becoming.
